Pax Britannica is probably my favorite of the books I have written. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozKvBw3tdeQ
It took a lot work to come up with an alternative history to account for the atom bomb theft. I am still a great fan of the James Bond books, and my starting point was how to retell this story and relocate it to the equatorial West Pacific. The locations of Emananus and Kavieng are real places in New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea. My wife, Nellie, who hails from Emananus, greatly helped identifying members of her family who would be characterised in the novel. Nellie also features in the book as Aunty Nellie, a Coast-watcher, keeping her part of the world safe for the British Empire. Its not far from the truth, as Nellie is an ardent Royalist and is not happy with Prince Harry decamping from ‘The Firm.’
I continue to find it strange that thrillers are rarely located in the tropical Pacific Islands. These islands stretch from the Mariana Islands in the far west, to Easter Islands in the Eastern Pacific. There is a rich diversity of cultures and islands, from large islands like New Ireland or New Britain in PNG to tiny atolls such as the Tokelau group. There is also a wealth of information in various archaeological and anthropological studies conducted in this vast region.
The long process of editing and proofing my latest work, He Might Be Still On Mars, is reaching its end. Hopefully it will be published in a matter of days not weeks. A new WIP, Wedding Presents from Pyongyang is parked in a holding orbit. Part of the text was set in Myanmar, a country I have not visited. I was fortunate to meet a lady from Myanmar who kindly reviewed my chapter and saved me from severe egg on the face.
